Official: Popular former United keeper named new manager of Huddersfield Town

Huddersfield Town have confirmed the managerial appointment of former Manchester United goalkeeper Lee Grant.

Grant parted ways with United in 2022 after a four-year spell at the club. He only made two appearances for the Red Devils.

After departing Old Trafford, Grant moved to Ipswich Town in a coaching capacity, where he worked under another former United man – Kieran McKenna.

Grant helped the Tractor Boys win back-to-back promotions from League One to the Premier League.

However, there was not much he could do to prevent Ipswich from being relegated after just one season in the top flight.

Grant started his playing career with Derby County. He also had spells at Sheffield Wednesday, Burnley and Stoke City, before finishing his career at United.

The 42-year-old takes charge of Huddersfield following their 10th-placed finish in League One this season, having lost their final six games under caretaker boss Jon Worthington.

Huddersfield have been on the hunt for a new manager since sacking Michael Duff in March.

Reacting to his appointment, the ex-United shot-stopper told the club’s in-house media, “Our goals are clear. It’s a really exciting moment to be part of the team looking to move in the right direction.”

“I’m serious about my work. My journey to this point has been a long one, this is not an overnight position that I have found myself in – this is a culmination of hard work that has led me to be in the position where Jake and Kevin feel comfortable to trust me leading the Club going forward.”

“Firstly, I am who I am – the players will find that out quite quickly. I am an enthusiastic guy, I want to work, I want to set a really high tempo and a high standard of work. I don’t have any doubts on how I want the team to look and feel, I know that it’s a style in a way that the Club and the players can resonate with and get behind.”

Grant vowed that under him, Huddersfield will be a “proactive” side that looks to play on the front foot and dominate the opposition.
