Bruno among Europa League top scorers before final

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has his full focus on doing everything he can to ensure he is the captain that is presented with the UEFA Europa League trophy on Wednesday night.

But his efforts in our pursuit of team success could see him come away from the final against Tottenham Hotspur having secured yet another individual award at the latter end of an impressive individual campaign.

That’s because our recently crowned Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year currently has a share of the lead in the stakes to be crowned this season’s Europa League top scorer.

The skipper has netted seven times on our run to the showpiece fixture at San Mames Stadium in Bilbao, a total also tallied up by Bodo/Glimt’s Kasper Hogh and Olympiacos forward Ayoub El Kaabi, whose teams are now out of the tournament.

With Hogh and El Kaabi not able to add to their numbers again this term, a goal for Fernandes in Wednesday’s 20:00 BST kick-off would put him in pole position to take the award outright, but he’s not the only finalist with a realistic shot at topping the standings.

His United team-mate Rasmus Hojlund provides healthy competition just one behind on six goals for the European campaign, while Spurs striker Dominic Solanke is also among the list’s top-16 marksmen having notched five times on our opponents’ road to Bilbao.

Bruno only opened his account in our seventh European outing of 2024/25 with the last-gasp decider in January’s league-phase win over Rangers, but has since scored this term’s only Europa League hat-trick in our last-16 victory at home to Real Sociedad and from the spot in the epic Old Trafford quarter-final comeback against Lyon, before netting twice in the semi-final first-leg triumph away to Athletic Club.

The brace at San Mames took our no.8 two goals clear of Hojlund, but the Dane reduced that deficit to one with his close-range finish in the second-leg success over Athletic, as we confirmed our place in tonight’s final, which is of course taking place back at the Basque club’s stadium.

In the event of a tie, the accolade has been shared in years gone by but Bruno does have previous as its outright winner, having topped the ranking with eight goals during the 2019/20 competition, in which he represented former club Sporting CP and United following his mid-season transfer between the sides.

Since the tournament was rebranded in 2009, only two players have finished at the summit of the scoring charts twice, with former Athletic Club forward Aritz Aduriz (2015/16 and 2017/18) following in the footsteps of ex-Reds striker Radamel Falcao, who took the crown for Porto in 2010/11 and then Atletico Madrid the following season.

Marcus Rashford was the last man to win the award while representing United (only he and Fernandes have done it), having shared the honour with Victor Boniface – now of Bayer Leverkusen but then of Union Saint-Gilloise – after the pair ended the 2022/23 campaign level on six apiece.
