United board set ambitious target for next season amidst wretched 2024/25 campaign – report

Manchester United are reportedly aiming for a top-six finish next season, despite an extremely poor 2024/25 campaign.

United slipped to yet another loss on Sunday, as they were beaten 2-0 by fellow Premier League strugglers West Ham. The result left the club just two places above the relegation zone.

It also means that the Red Devils have yet to reach 40 points, with just two games to play. Even if United were to win their final two matches against Chelsea and Aston Villa, they can finish no higher than 13th, which is five positions worse than their previous lowest finish in the Premier League – eighth in 2023/24.

United’s worst-ever Premier League points tally is 58, recorded in the 2021/22 season. This year, they are guaranteed to fall short of that total by at least 13 points.

These numbers don’t even highlight the full picture of just how bad United have been this term, although Ruben Amorim gave the impression that he is entirely aware in his post-match presser after the defeat at the hands of the Hammers.

Amorim admitted that he bears full responsibility for the team’s performance and warned that if there isn’t a significant improvement next season, both he and his coaching staff could be at serious risk of losing their jobs.

Now, the Manchester Evening News report that United are targeting a top-six finish in the Premier League next season.

It’s understood that club officials view a top-six finish in the 2025/26 season as an “acceptable” target, regardless of whether the team wins the Europa League and secures Champions League qualification.

United are set to take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final in Bilbao, with the showdown now less than a week away.

However, Amorim and a number of his players including Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo have conceded that even winning the Europa League would not save what has been a calamitous season.

With Premier League competition fiercer than ever, United will need to make significant investments in the transfer market and strengthen multiple areas of the squad if they are to meet their top-six ambitions.

United are believed to be keen on recruiting a striker, a number ten, a midfielder and possibly a goalkeeper.
