Rio Ferdinand gushes over stunning revival of “ridiculed” United star who was “the butt of all jokes”

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has praised Harry Maguire for his remarkable turnaround at the club, highlighting his transformation from “the butt of a lot of jokes” to a vital figure under Ruben Amorim.

Maguire was once again instrumental for United as they secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Athletic Club on Thursday, putting them firmly on course for a place in the Europa League final

The England international was incredible at both ends of the pitch, with the highlight of his performance being some brilliant footwork before an exquisite delivery for Casemiro’s opener.

Maguire is enjoying a dramatic change in fortunes at Old Trafford after a few incredibly challenging years. He hasn’t had the best of times at the club since his £80m move from Leicester City in 2019. He had become emblematic of United’s struggles and, in some circles, was even regarded as a figure of ridicule – but that perception has unquestionably changed.

After the win at San Mames, Amorim highlighted Maguire’s improvement as a classic example for any player struggling for form.

Ferdinand has echoed Amorim’s sentiments, saying on TNT Sports, “When you see what he’s had to go through at Manchester United, he’s been ridiculed, sometimes laughed at and he’s been made the butt of a lot of jokes.”

“The character and personality he’s shown to withstand that and stay there when many people were saying ‘he might as well just go’. I probably would’ve said he should’ve gone for his own mental health.”

“He’s stayed there, and he’s shown [what happens] if you work hard, knuckle down and go, ‘you know what, I’m good enough to be here, and I’m going to wait for my next chance, and I’m going to take it.’ He’s a great example.”

Former Premier League striker Peter Crouch agreed with Ferdinand, adding, “I remember playing against him when he was at Hull, and then he went to Leicester. That’s what he used to do, he was full of confidence, he used to run, come out with the ball.”

“He did it for England, and he’s suffered from a lack of confidence. He’s gaining that back, and he’s always been comfortable with the ball. He was getting it [criticism] from all angles, and he’s always been a good player, and he’s never shirked responsibility.”

“You’re seeing the character come through now and the player he’s become again.”

Maguire and his teammates are back in action on Sunday when they face Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.
