United “closing in” on shrewd summer swoop to replace star guaranteed to leave Old Trafford – report

Manchester United are reportedly on the verge of sealing a deal for Preston North End goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.

United’s goalkeeping department is set for a radical overhaul this summer, with multiple departures and incomings expected.

There are doubts over the future of Andre Onana and his understudy Altay Bayindir, whose mistake-strewn performances have fallen incredibly short of expectations. Onana could be on his way to the Saudi Pro League, while a return to the Super Lig for Bayindir has been mooted.

Then there is Tom Heaton, who will leave United in June following the expiry of his contract. There have even been rumours that the veteran shot-stopper could retire and possibly assume a coaching role at Old Trafford, alongside Jonny Evans.

Earlier this month, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that the Red Devils are on the hunt for a domestic cover goalkeeper –  a search that led them to Freddie Woodman.

The 28-year-old is set to be one of the most sought-after free-agent goalkeepers this summer, having kept 13 clean sheets in 37 Championship appearances this season.

He is currently sidelined for the rest of the season after suffering an ankle injury during last month’s international break.

Now, Football Insider report that United are “closing in” on Woodman as a replacement for Heaton.

The news outlet states that United are “working on a deal” to sign the London-born goalkeeper on a free transfer. If the transfer gets over the line, Woodman will be the club’s new third-choice keeper.

Woodman already boasts Premier League experience, having already played in the top flight with Newcastle.

Over the years, he has had several loan spells with clubs such as Bournemouth, Swansea, Aberdeen, Kilmarnock, and Crawley Town, before making a permanent move from Newcastle to Preston in 2022.

Meanwhile, United are back in action on Sunday when they go away to the Vitality Stadium to take on Bournemouth.
