Amorim: We’ll tell the fans the truth

Ruben Amorim stressed that Manchester United fans deserve to be told the truth following our Premier League defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

After the 1-0 loss, decided by a late free-kick from Wolves substitute Pablo Sarabia, with the visitors’ first attempt on target, Amorim was asked what message he could give to fans looking for something positive to latch onto.

The boss was straightforward in his assessment, suggesting that simply being honest with supporters about our shortcomings is the only thing he can do.

Rasmus Hojlund’s performance, having tested Wolves but ultimately come away without a much-needed goal, was another point of discussion in the press conference, as was reaction to Tyler Fredricson’s senior United debut.

Read on for everything the boss said…

You edged the game for large periods, are you frustrated by the result?

“If you look at the game, we were the better team. But, in the end it doesn’t matter. If we don’t score goals, nothing matters. The result is what counts, especially in these kind of moments. We created a lot of chances, we had the game and controlled the game. We blocked some good players from the opponent and then one set-piece has changed the game. That’s it. It’s really frustrating to end the game like this.”

Is a 15th league defeat a reminder of what has to happen in the summer?

“We will address that in the end. We have a plan and talk about that every day. But the season is not over, so let’s focus on that.”

What can you say to fans looking for something positive?

“We say to the fans the truth, that we lack a lot of things in our team, that we miss chances. If we don’t score goals, we are not going to win. And we have a lot to do and focus on improving the team, step by step, and understanding that, until the end of the league [season], it’s going to be like this. And then we need to do something.”

Is there an argument to take Rasmus Hojlund out of the spotlight?

“If you look at the games, we have several players that missed big chances, not just Rasmus. But Rasmus, of course, the game is to score goals because he is a striker. But it’s a team thing. I’ve already said that. Our team should score goals. It’s not just Rasmus that’s missing the chances, it’s all the team.”

How do you maintain Hojlund’s spirits?

“The only way I know is to work on him, show him the videos. He needs to score a goal [and] he will not score if he’s out. So I try to manage that during games. He needs to score one. That’s all a striker needs.”

Did this game underline the need to recruit a proven goalscorer?

“Again, it’s a team thing. Of course, we have an idea what this team needs. But also, we play with at least three guys up front, so they can score goals. We play the midfielders that can reach [attacking areas] and you saw it today. All the team needs to score more goals and we have opportunities with the midfielders, with the striker. We need to improve as a team, because if you don’t score goals in this league, it’s impossible to win games.”

How do you think Tyler Fredricson did today, and will there be chance for him and other kids now to stake a claim for a place in the squad for next season?

“That I don’t know. The season is not over. What I felt today is they deserved a better memory on their first games. Tyler played really well, also [Harry] Amass played really well, and they deserved better because we were the better team, played well, created chances. But in the end, again, one opportunity for the opponent, they score and the memories are not the best for these kids, but they played quite well.”
