United hold talks with €40m-rated rampaging defender over sensational summer transfer – report

Manchester United have reportedly held talks with the representatives of Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong over a summer transfer.

Ruben Amorim’s favored 3-4-3 system is heavily dependent on wing-backs, an area where United currently lack quality options. In January, the club brought in Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu to bolster the left wing-back position. Dorgu has shown great promise, offering a preview of the profile Amorim seeks for the right flank as well.

Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have both been deployed as right wing-backs at times, but neither has looked like a natural fit for the role.

Frimpong, on the other hand, boasts an impressive track record under Xabi Alonso, who, like Amorim, relies on wing-backs to provide width and stretch play.

As Leverkusen won the Bundesliga last season, Frimpong played a key role, contributing nine goals and seven assists in 31 top-flight games.

So far this term, the Netherlands international has managed 10 goal contributions in 26 league matches.

Frimpong was linked to United last summer and it appears he’s back on the agenda again as the Red Devils plot a squad overhaul.

According to Graeme Bailey of TBR, United have joined Liverpool in talks for Frimpong. Liverpool are eyeing the 24-year-old as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is on the brink of joining Real Madrid as a free agent.

“TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey understands that Manchester United and Manchester City have held talks with Frimpong’s camp in recent weeks.”

“Frimpong’s talent in wide areas has brought him firmly onto United’s radar, who see him as a potentially good fit for their right wing-back role in Ruben Amorim’s system.”

Frimpong was formerly contracted to City but he left the Etihad in 2019 for Celtic without making a senior appearance for them.

A week ago, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano noted that Frimping has a release clause worth around €40m.
