Is De Gea right in his argument with Bruno?

David De Gea has reignited an old debate with his former Manchester United colleague Bruno Fernandes.

Our long-serving keeper, now with Fiorentina in Serie A, took the time to respond to a post on our official X account over the weekend, highlighting one of Bruno’s 50 assists in the Premier League.

It came towards the end of the 2020/21 season, when Edinson Cavani scored a brilliant long-range goal in the 1-1 home draw against Fulham.

“49 assists! This is mine. Ask him,” said the Spaniard, alongside a laughing-face emoji.

The strike won our Goal of the Month award and it came when some fans were allowed back into the stadium, as restrictions started to be eased during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fernandes had received the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year trophy on the pitch before kick-off and there was a positive atmosphere as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side took on the Cottagers, with the Europa League final against Villarreal on the horizon.

The incident came in the 15th minute when De Gea, restored to the side in place of Dean Henderson, launched a long ball downfield.

Fernandes moved to help it on and Cavani gained possession to execute a quite brilliant 40-yard lob at the Stretford End, to show the supporters what they had been missing.

The big question was whether Bruno actually touched the ball because, if he didn’t, the Uruguay international would have been in an offside position.

The officials, with the help of VAR, ruled our Portuguese magnifico did contribute to the goal and, hence, he was officially awarded the assist.

Bruno was more concerned we did not win the game, with Joe Bryan equalising, but did have this to say to MUTV afterwards about the contentious issue.

“I don’t know,” he laughed. “Honestly, I think I don’t but the referee was saying I touched it and gave the assist to me and honestly I don’t care, we scored and that’s what’s important.”
