United to recoup just £20m from top star’s transfer having turned down £80m just 12 months ago – report

Manchester United may only bank a rather paltry £20 million when they sell Marcus Rashford in the summer.

With Sir Jim Ratcliffe confirming that Ruben Amorim will stay at Old Trafford next season, there seems little chance that Rashford has any future at the club.

Despite attracting numerous clubs including high-flying Barcelona in the winter, he eventually joined Aston Villa on loan.

It has been reported that Rashford would now be interested in staying at Villa long term after a rather positive start to life at Villa Park, despite the fact he is yet to score a goal for his new club.

United are said to have no regrets about letting him go and the Villans reportedly have an option to buy the forward for £40 million in the summer.

The Daily Mail report however that in reality, United will only earn half of this.

“If the cost of rebuilding United’s squad wasn’t steep enough, Confidential understands that the club could bank as little as £20m from selling Marcus Rashford this summer.”

“Rashford is on loan at Aston Villa who are paying a minimum of 75 per cent of his £315,000-a-week wages until June 30 and have an option to buy him in a permanent deal for £40m.”

Other clubs could certainly get the player for the same price but “none of them – including Villa – are likely to match his current salary, which was given to the Wythenshawe-born star at the height of Paris Saint-Germain’s interest in him and has more than three years to run.”

Therefore, United would likely need to give Rashford a pay-off to compensate the rather large drop in wages that he would probably need to agree to when joining a new club.

“Insiders believe this would be in the region of £20m – halving the figure they would receive as a transfer fee.”

Even though United hope to sell numerous high-earning players such as Antony, Jadon Sancho and Casemiro this summer, they would be banking on making significant money from Rashford, so this news could be a devastating blow for United’s dreams of building up a sizeable war chest for Amorim’s transfer plans.

Reports almost a year ago to the day claimed PSG were willing to pay £80 million for the player, but United were holding out for £100 million. Whether or not those reports are to be believed, there is no doubt that United have missed the boat when it comes to cashing in on one of their prize assets.
