Dorgu set to miss these key games, Amorim has a selection nightmare on his hands

Manchester United battled back despite going a goal down and a man down to eventually clinch all three points thanks to a hard-fought 3-2 win over Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Wednesday.

What made the victory even sweeter was that all three goals on the night came from set-pieces, an aspect in which the Red Devils have been pretty weak throughout the season.

The biggest talking point of the game was obviously Patrick Dorgu’s 43rd minute red card. It was a difficult night for the Dane who was starting his first Premier League game at Old Trafford since his January move.

The 20-year-old was shown a straight red following a lengthy VAR review and on-field referral after he caught Omari Hutchinson high up on his left leg.

In slow-motion it looked worse than it was with the wingback actually getting a touch on the ball first before his momentum saw him clatter into the Ipswich attacker in a dangerous way.

There was no malice whatsoever but as soon as VAR got involved, it almost seemed destined that he would be shown a red card, especially after United’s reprieve at Goodison Park last time out.

The discourse throughout the week was all about how lucky United had got and how the referees had got the penalty call all wrong.

Whether the Red Devils will appeal or not remains to be seen but the direct red card means the former Lecce star will miss the next three domestic games.

And straight reds for violent conduct get carried forward from the competition in which it was awarded to the domestic cup competitions as well.

Dorgu will miss three domestic games

And that means he will be unavailable for Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Fulham, following which he is also ruled out for the Arsenal game at home and Leicester City away in the Premier League.

Dorgu will be available for selection for United’s Europa League games against Real Sociedad as those games fall under the UEFA jurisdiction.

As a result, Amorim will once again have to play Diogo Dalot on the left despite another poor display against the Tractor Boys while Noussair Mazraoui is likely to slot in at right wingback.

Dorgu will be a huge miss but Wednesday’s win will surely do a lot for the team’s confidence and fans will be hoping to see more of the same fire in the FA Cup on Sunday, a competition which represents a genuine shot at silverware this season.
