Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has admitted Patrick Dorgu made a mistake against Ipswich Town, but passionately slammed any suggestions that the former Lecce man is not ready for Premier League football.
Dorgu, who signed for United during the January transfer window, was given his marching orders in the first half of the club’s 3-2 win over Ipswich Town on Wednesday evening.
The Dane was sent off after a reckless challenge on Omari Hutchinson. Initially, the referee didn’t deem that the tackle was excessive but changed his mind after heading to the monitor.
Luckily for United, being a man down didn’t affect them too much as they still managed to clinch all three points courtesy of a Sam Morsy own goal and set-piece finishes from Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire.
Both of Ipswich’s goals were bagged by Jaden Philogene.
After the final whistle, Amorim spoke to TNT Sports and was asked about Dorgu’s red card and whether the 20-year-old is ready for the step-up to England’s top flight.
The 40-year-old coach answered, “He’s ready because he proved it in the last game. Any player can make a mistake like he did tonight.”
“He wants to play the ball but maybe he’s a little rash in the way he went for the ball but he’s clearly ready. He’s inexperienced but he’s ready for the Premier League.”
“People will judge right away but last week he was okay…good performance against Everton and today they will say that he’s not experienced enough to play in the Premier League but I don’t feel that way.”
On whether he observed a change in confidence in his players, Amorim replied, “It was just a game but I felt that we started the game in a different way. You can feel it in the way we controlled possession.”
“We were more calm with the ball. More credit to my players because even with that goal [the early error], we managed to control the tempo of the game, create situations and then to turn things around…they did a great job.”
“Today I’m not frustrated. We controlled the game and since the first minute I felt the players were trying to play and we managed to score two goals.”
“The sending-off changed the game a bit but the fight the fans showed and the fans helped a lot and we fully deserved the three points.”
“There are some moments that are really hard but that’s natural in every profession, you need to suffer.”

United are back in action on Sunday when they welcome Fulham to Old Trafford in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
