United Treble winner backs blockbuster signing Amorim can still make before the end of the season – report

Manchester United’s January transfer window did little to ease the pressure on Ruben Amorim who was left with fewer attacking options at his disposal at the end of the market than he had going into it.

Amorim’s struggles have largely been down to his players’ inability to create and take chances in the final third which has led to a raft of poor performances since his arrival in November.

The Portuguese coach will now have to wait until the summer to perform the major surgery required to his squad, which undoubtedly needs an overhaul to give him a chance of turning the tide in his first full season in charge.

However, there is one high profile star that United could onboard between now and the end of the campaign who would certainly provide an additional option for Amorim in attacking areas.

As reported by The Sun, a move for Paul Pogba has been backed by former United striker Dwight Yorke who believes the Frenchman would jump at the chance of re-signing at Old Trafford.

“I would give Paul Pogba a third chance, definitely, because of what United currently have and because of what we know he is capable of producing.

United have struggled, and Pogba is a damn good player. I’m sure Pogba would be very keen,” he said.

Yorke added that despite his age, Pogba represents an upgrade on United’s current options and the fact he is now available on a free transfer means it should be a deal INOES are exploring for the remainder of the season, at least.

“Even though he’s 31, I think he’s far better than what we have now. And if you’re going to get a player for free, who’s far better than all our players in midfield, then you do it.

With two months left, I would say, ‘Let’s have a look’. Give him a contract. You’ve got time here to prove yourself. You can come and play and help us out with the situation,” said Yorke.

The Treble winner isn’t the first former United player to back the deal with Rio Ferdinand and Louis Saha also throwing their weight behind the signing.

Yorke says that despite the 13 point cushion between themselves and the relegation zone, Amorim and his side are “not safe yet” and believes Pogba would provide a shot in the arm for the team to end the season strongly.

The World Cup winner is free to return to professional football in March after serving his ban for a doping offence which subsequently led to him leaving Serie A giants Juventus.

It’s been reported United are exploring the option of re-signing the maverick midfielder who is chomping at the bit to prove he still has something to offer at the top end of the game.
