Who was Player of the Match against Palace?

Sunday 16 February 2025 14:02

Manchester United needed to be “professional” in the words of Marc Skinner to come out on top against Crystal Palace in the WSL on Sunday afternoon.

Although bottom of the league, Palace demonstrated some threat at Leigh Sports Village, but plenty of those dressed in Red stood up to be counted.

Grace Clinton returned to the starting line-up in a league game and gave an all-action display off the right flank, marked with an important goal that killed the game in United’s favour.

It was also another fine day pulling the creative strings for Ella Toone, while Maya Le Tissier made a crucial goal-line block when United led by just a single goal.

But fans voting in our player of the match poll were blown away by the two-goal contribution of Elisabeth Terland.

Teri scored for the third successive game across all competitions, with a decisive brace in this one taking her overall tally for the season to nine goals.

It earned the Norway international a monstrous 51 per cent of the fan vote, making her a clear winner. Toone came second with 19 per cent.

Both Terland goals highlighted a predatory instinct in and around the penalty area. The game’s opener saw her played in by Hinata Miyazawa, able to turn and find the bottom corner with composure.

For number two, it was an unexpected stroke of luck when a deflection turned the ball into her path, but our no.19 was sharp enough to take advantage of the moment. She skipped past Palace goalkeeper Milla-Maj Majasaari with her first touch and finished with her second.

Elisabeth Terland had a defining impact on the game.

Terland could have had a hat-trick on another day. She struck the base of the post during the first half and saw another decent chance blocked by Palace defender Allyson Swaby. A further opportunity later in the opening 45 minutes saw her narrowly miss the target under pressure, having rounded Majasaari.

The Norwegian is in blistering form right now and her next United goal will be her 10th for the club following last summer’s move from Brighton.

Congratulations, Teri! Thank you to all who voted.
