Ruben expects Reds to feel the benefits

Ruben Amorim expects his Manchester United squad have felt the benefit of a fixture-free week ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash at Tottenham.

The Reds were last in action in the Emirates FA Cup fourth-round win over Leicester City on 7 February, and it is hoped the time on the training ground at Carrington will have a positive effect on the trip south to London.

Although Amorim has suggested there have been a couple of fitness issues in the build-up to the game, there will hopefully be more fluidity to our play in the capital.

“We had some issues at the end of the week with players,” our head coach told club media. “And that was the hardest part of the week.

“It was a good week to improve on physical aspects but also tactical aspects.”

New boy Patrick Dorgu, who made his debut in the 2-1 triumph against the Foxes, should also be more in tune with his colleagues after practice on the training pitch.

“We work with him and he is understanding better the way we want to play,” added Amorim.

“He has some habits from the last club [Lecce]. In the first moments, he has had to change things, but it has been a good week.”

Alejandro Garnacho was our Man of the Match against Leicester, after coming off the bench to good effect, and the boss feels the Argentina international is taking his instructions on board and providing a real threat going forward.

“Yes, he is enjoying the way we play,” Amorim said. “He is confident and he is good in the moments one v one. These kind of details, in a player like him, is important.”

Members of the current Under-18s side will look to emulate Garnacho’s achievement of winning the FA Youth Cup and then graduating into the senior team, and the 5-1 victory over Chelsea in the competition this week has not gone unnoticed by Ruben and everybody at Carrington.

“Of course, they have [done well] and we need them a lot for the future of this club and I am really happy for them,” he explained. “But they need to keep working because the Premier League is a different world, and they have to improve every day. So I am really happy and they need to continue.”
