PL side were frontrunners for £72m hitman but their indecision allowed United to capitalise – Athletic

Rasmus Hojlund has been one of the biggest disappointments this season for Manchester United with the Dane managing only two goals in the Premier League so far this campaign.

He has now gone 14 games without finding the back of the net and apart from the lack of goals, his overall play has also been disappointing.

His confidence has naturally taken a hit as seen from the 22-year-old struggling to do even the basics right. He regularly loses duels with defenders while his first touch has also let him down numerous times.

So much so that Ruben Amorim is reportedly fed up and is open to his departure next summer with Juventus and West Ham among his suitors.

Rasmus’ struggles

The Denmark international might have hoped for a lot better in his sophomore campaign given the fact that he had finished his debut season in red as the club’s top scorer.

However, things could have been a lot different for the striker if The Athletic are to be believed who have claimed that Everton were favourites for his signature during his time with Sturm Graz in Austria.

However, due to the Toffees’ financial difficulties, the young striker headed to Italy to link up with Atalanta and after a promising debut campaign, he arrived at Old Trafford instead for a mammoth £72 million.

“Before signing Maupay, the recruitment team (of Everton) had explored deals for Viktor Gyokeres, then at Coventry City, and Rasmus Hojlund during his stint with Sturm Graz in Austria, but the collective decision was taken by the hierarchy to go with a safer option.”

Everton wanted him before United

Everton eventually signed Beto from Udinese two summers ago for an initial £21 million and he has not exactly set the stage alight.

And neither has Hojlund, who still has age on his side and hopefully he can conjure up something special in the second half of the campaign.

Kevin Thelwell, who is the Toffees’ Director of Football, was the man responsible for Everton’s interest in the Dane.

And given the United No 9’s form, United are not expected to earn anything close to what they paid Atalanta for his services. It will be interesting to see of the Merseyside club return for Hojlund given he will become much more financially viable next summer.
