Things you may have missed from Ruben’s presser

Friday 14 February 2025 14:00

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim says things have to change for his side between now and the end of the season.

The Reds are currently 13th in the Premier League table and have won three of our last 10 games in the competition.

That is something Amorim admits must change as we approach the business end of the campaign, with a trip to Tottenham next up on Sunday afternoon.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have suffered the same bad luck as United in recent weeks, with the Lilywhites currently below us in the Premier League standings.

Ruben spoke to the media earlier today and his answers speak volumes about what he is trying to do to turn our fortunes around…

Press conference part one | Ruben Amorim began by answering a question on Mason Mount, Luke Shaw and Jonny Evans…

THE UPCOMING THREAT

“Our biggest problem now is Tottenham and we know that in this moment at the club I have to understand all these problems. But that problem in our club is not new and we already knew that and all the rules of fair play and we have a problem at the moment. But that cannot influence the team and the way I prepare for the next game. So my focus is on that and not on the other things.”

WHAT LIES AHEAD“Here it is simple: to do something, we need to sell players. My focus is to prepare the game [because] we cannot do this now, as the window is closed. We need to focus on the games that we have, especially the next one, and then in the summer we will see.”

Amorim’s most intriguing answer was relayed when quizzed about the pressure for playing for such a big club, with Antony and formed Red Scott McTominay both brought up.

Ruben admitted dealing with the nerves in those high-pressure situations can ultimately make or break a player but a consistent team base is what is crucial when integrating new additions.

DO OUR PLAYERS PLAY WITH MORE FREEDOM ELSEWHERE?

“I don’t know, sometimes it is like that and it can happen in any club like that. This is a club with a lot of pressure. In this kind of club you have to have almost [have] like a base of a team to put in younger players that have come from abroad that come from a team with a strong base, that can help them with dealing with that pressure. In that moment, we do not have that and it is also really hard on them. You feel it in [Patrick] Dorgu, he was a little bit nervous in the first moment, but if you are playing better as a team and you have a strong core, that can [help] cope with this and [when] we are winning games and are strong in the games, like it was supposed to be at this kind of club, it will be more easy for this kind of players to be free and play their football. Football is like that and when you reach that level, you have to cope with pressure and sometimes they go to other clubs and they are free without the pressure and they play better. I don’t know.”
