Marc Skinner and Maya Le Tissier have underlined the importance of remembering the 1958 Munich Air Disaster, ahead of United Women marking the 67-year anniversary before Sunday evening’s WSL fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion.
This is the women’s team’s closest home fixture to 6 February and, as such, Skinner will lay a commemorative wreath ahead of kick-off, while the players will wear black armbands.
The North Stand at Leigh Sports Village will also be adorned with Munich flags, and supporters are advised to arrive early for a Flowers of Manchester tribute.
In the official matchday programme, Skinner uses his manager’s column to remember those we lost.
“As this is our last home match before the anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster next month, it’s important that we take the time this evening to remember and pay tribute to those who sadly lost their lives.
“Since coming to United, I’ve learned our club is built on success and tragedy. Through the highest highs and lowest lows, we stick together and push through as one. We are unique in that even when the Busby Babes faced the darkest of days, they were a shining light for the growth of our club.
“They will never be forgotten and live every day in all of us that love Manchester United. When the anniversary comes around, it plays as a reminder that you work for the biggest club in the world and to never forget you must bring your best every day, as we’re standing on the shoulders of giants.”
In her captain’s column, Le Tissier explains the importance of the occasion to readers, writing: “We love playing for United, a club with so much history, and tonight we’ll pay tribute to the lives lost in the Munich Air Disaster.
“Its upcoming anniversary is a reminder of how privileged we are to represent this special club, and I hope we can channel that pride and honour into our performance as we commemorate the tragedy this evening.”
United Women v Brighton kicks off at 18:45 GMT. Live radio commentary will be available via ManUtd.com and in the United App.
