Ruben Amorim had mixed thoughts following his Manchester United side’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

The Reds defied the odds to take a much-deserved point from Merseyside, as the hosts dropped points on home soil for only the second time this term.

After Lisandro Martinez had put us ahead, Arne Slot’s team turned the game on its ahead with Cody Gakpo’s equaliser and Mo Salah’s penalty, before Amad swept home to equalise and earn us a draw 10 minutes from time.

But speaking to the media after the game, Amorim suggested that, while pleased with how his players united as a team against Liverpool, he had hoped to have seen more displays of this ilk in our previous outings.

Read on for the boss’ full post-match thoughts from L4…

Amorim: Our fight was key Video

Amorim: Our fight was key

Ruben Amorim is pleased with the way United battled at Liverpool, but insists his team have to maintain that desire…

THE PERFORMANCE

“I want to see my team to play so much better, but I think the most important thing to address today is the mentality. And that is the key for everything. So today we were a different team, not because of the system, not because of the technical aspect of the game, the tactical aspect of the game, we faced the competition in the way that we’re supposed to face every day – training and match. It doesn’t matter the place, the opponent, we need to face every day like that.”

CHALLENGING THE PLAYERS AND GETTING A REACTION

“I am trying that every day, I am trying to push this team every day. Sometimes it is maybe not the best way, because I’m always challenging these players in everything I do, because I feel that we are – not just the players – but everybody in Manchester United is too comfortable. So I think we need sometimes a shock. And you can see it today, we were a different team. It’s not about the system, it’s the way we face the competition.”

ON BRUNO SAYING WE NEED MORE PERFORMANCES

“Yeah, I think it’s a very good sign. It’s really clear. We lost three games in a row at home. Some of the games, we suffer two goals without doing nothing. So I’m upset today, really upset, because I’m pleased for the performance, but everybody today is going to say to that team that they did a good job, so today I’m allowed to be the only guy upset with the team. But today they were a team.”

THE IMPACT OF A MIDWEEK BREAK

“I don’t want to use that, but of course, when you train, you understand better the way we play, the positioning, the characteristics of the team-mate, those things are really important. But I don’t want to use that today. Today is all about the focus when you are playing football, the focus on set pieces, the focus on passing the ball, not in the sloppy way but in the way that we can not lose one ball because in the other part of the pitch is Salah, is Diaz, so you don’t lose the ball. If you lose the ball in some parts of the pitch, you know you are going to suffer. If you have that mentality, you are a different team and I think that is clear.”

Martinez: We played with more freedom Video

Martinez: We played with more freedom

Goalscorer Lisandro Martinez says United played with more belief and freedom at Anfield, and must take that forward…

UGARTE’S DISPLAY

“I think I don’t want to talk about just Ugarte. Ugarte is the only guy that I know really, really, really well. Everybody, even in the bench. So today, they faced the competition in a different way. It’s so simple but so difficult to explain here. So it’s so clear for everybody.”

A PLATFORM FOR OUR MENTALITY

“The end of the season is so long. But we had some good games during this last month. Good games, but then we drop again. It’s something that we need to be really consistent. So if we have this talk after one… Against [Manchester] City was the same. So we can talk but we need to show and to do it. And the best thing is right away tomorrow; tomorrow we have training and we have to maintain the same level of mentality.”

LIVERPOOL’S PENALTY

“No, I didn’t see the image. It seems like someone touched the ball before touching hand.”

THOUGHTS ON THE SPOT-KICK

“Focus on the performance. It was a shame because it’s really hard in the moment, when he touched the ball, you change the direction of the ball, was really hard for us. But when we were losing 2-1, you feel we could draw and maybe win the game. You could have snatched it, I think that is clear.”

ZIRKZEE’S PASS TO MAGUIRE

“For me, I think it was the perfect decision, because he can shoot but he put the ball more in the centre for one guy is running back. The ball I think was really slow for Harry to score, but sometimes you can not do it. But Josh made a good decision in my opinion.”
