Amorim reacts to defeat at Wolves

Thursday 26 December 2024 20:15

Ruben Amorim admitted his frustrations after Manchester United’s 2-0 Boxing Day defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The hosts capitalised on captain Bruno Fernandes’s early second-half dismissal, with the lively Matheus Cunha scoring direct from a corner to initially separate the sides. As United threatened a late equaliser, Wolves counter-attacked for a 99th-minute second to seal victory.

Amorim gave his reaction to the BBC and Prime Video post-match…

GAME CONTROL

“It was two different parts. We play 45 minutes without one man. It was tough for us, [but] we didn’t suffer a lot of chances. Even with 10 men, we are near their goal during the second half but, again, one set-piece changes the game, [and makes it] even harder. We controlled the first half. Sometimes we lose the ball, Wolves make some transitions, but we are in control of the game. We had a little bit of a lack of aggression in the last third but we were in control in the game. Then we have the second half to do something more, but then the player is sent off, it’s really hard for us.”

FRUSTRATION AT CUNHA’S CORNER GOAL

“I saw last week the same goal against Tottenham. Onana cannot go to the ball because he has one man in front and one man in the back and in the last moment, [when] he’s jumping, just a touch in his back can change the way you see the ball.

“Some guys are not even looking to the ball. But I don’t want to focus on that. The good thing is we were near the goal even with 10 men, but we lost and we continue our job.”

ATTACKING AT THE END

“That situation [the response to the goal] was good because you can feel it, even in the stadium and the other team. We pushed the other team with 10 men, near their box, but in the end, lots to improve.”

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS

“We have to improve the relationships but we have some moments, I think we lack a little bit of aggression, but we train, we try to find a better way to win games, but we controlled the games, like the other ones we lost. I think we were always in control, not always dominating, but in control, but the same things, set-pieces and also the sending off was really hard for us. I said it before everybody: it will be a long journey and this moment will be really tough. We have to continue. We need to have time to train.”
