Manchester United earned a massive victory over Liverpool on Sunday night, defeating their bitter rivals 2-1.
In addition to being the first victory that Man United recorded at Anfield since 2016, it was manager Ruben Amorim’s first time winning back-to-back matches since arriving at Old Trafford.
Key to United’s victory was their defence, particularly with Harry Maguire producing a fiery performance. Still, it wasn’t only his defence that won United the game.
A rock at the back
Maguire made a massive eight clearances against Liverpool, including a threatening ball from Cody Gakpo that was just metres away from the goal line.
He also blocked a shot and made an interception.
With 34 touches, Maguire completed 14 of 22 passes, making for a 64% passing accuracy.
Maguire completed just one of four long balls, although it is important to note that this is not something he is generally expected to do in his position.
Winning five of nine aerial duels, it wasn’t just in defence where Maguire impressed.
Saviour up front
The greatest moment of Maguire’s match was no doubt his winning goal just six minutes from time, heading home a cross from Bruno Fernandes.
It was one shot and one goal from the centre-back, who stepped up exactly when his team needed him most.
While he may be ageing, Maguire was crucial to United’s victory, proving that he still has plenty in the tank this season.
