100% aerial duels, 100% long balls, 5 tackles, 3 key passes: United can’t afford to sell this star who put up a masterclass vs. Villa

Manchester United cruised to a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa, to end what has been a miserable 2024/25 season on a relatively high note.

United were by far the better side and were deserved winners against Villa, who were reduced to 10 men in the first half after Emiliano Martinez was given his marching orders for a reckless foul on Rasmus Hojlund.

The Red Devils finally broke the deadlock in the 76th minute, when Amad met a superb delivery from Bruno Fernandes and headed the ball into the back of the net.

Moments later, Amad earned a penalty for United, and Christian Eriksen confidently converted from the spot to make it 2-0 and seal all three points.

There were a number of standout performers against Unai Emery’s men, with Fernandes being one of them.

The captain’s standout moment was his stunning assist for Amad’s goal, but his overall contribution went far beyond that.

During the time he was on the pitch, Fernandes successfully found his teammates with 78 of the 85 passes he attempted (92% pass accuracy). Three of these were key passes. He also created one big chance.

He connected with all four long balls that he pinged.

Fernandes was unlucky not to get on the score sheet. He had a few cracks at goal but just lacked the finishing touch. He managed four shots, four of which were off target but the other one required the Villa goalkeeper to swing into action.

The 30-year-old couldn’t complete the one dribble he embarked on. He was top-class defensively, winning six of the 14 ground duels he delved into and the one aerial duel he vied for.

Fernandes also put in five tackles.

There have been rumours surrounding Fernandes’ future at Old Trafford amidst interest from the Saudi Pro League, but United simply can’t afford to let him go.

Not only can his output not be replaced, but his leadership is also crucial.
