Former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has been encouraged to return to the Premier League by former England international Paul Gascoigne.
Greenwood broke into the United first team in 2019 but he was suspended by the team in 2022 after being charged with “attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour.”
These charges were eventually dropped in 2023, but United decided that they could not reintegrate the player back into the squad.
He was first loaned out to Getafe in Spain during the 2023-2024 season and completed a permanent transfer to Olympique de Marseille last summer.
Greenwood had an exceptional season as he scored 22 goals and provided six assists in all competitions.
This fine form has led to speculation that the 23 year old may soon make a spectacular return to the Premier League with two English clubs, including Liverpool, having been linked to the player in the recent past.
Speaking to The Daily Express, Paul Gascoigne commented on Greenwood’s potential future in England.
He claimed, “if he went abroad and he’s more comfortable coming back and with the goals he’s scoring, then yeah, come back.”
The former Tottenham Hotspur player did admit that he would bring “baggage” with him but his talent may make it worth it.
Adding to what he had previously said he stated, “I don’t know if he brings quite a bit of baggage. [But] if you’re going take a gamble on him, take a gamble on him. You have got to give him a chance, even if it’s just half a game.”
He went on, “sometimes, with these friendlies, you can play 11 [players] in one half and then the other 11 in the second half. Give the guy a chance.”
There is no doubt Greenwood’s talent alone would easily secure him a move back to England. Nonetheless, it is hard to envision any Premier League club being prepared to withstand the public backlash of his hypothetical return to English shores.
