‘World class’ – Arsenal fans single one player out for special praise after Crystal Palace

Arsenal’s supporters have taken to social media in their numbers on Friday night, to single one member of the club’s squad out for special praise. The Gunners, of course, were back in action a short time ago.In their first outing of the new campaign, and the Premier League curtain-raiser, Mikel Arteta’s troops made the trip across London, for a meeting with capital rivals Crystal Palace.Arsenal headed into proceedings eyeing an altogether more positive start to the campaign this time round, after famously slipping to defeat at the hands of newly-promoted Brentford in the club’s 2021/22 opener. And, when all was said and done, this is precisely what the evening’s visitors managed.A pair of goals, netted by Gabriel Martinelli and Marc Guehi (OG) either side of the interval guided Arteta and co. to a comfortable 2-0 triumph, and an early spot at the summit of the Premier League table. It is not goalscorer Martinelli, nor debut assist provider Oleksandr Zinchenko, though, who have since secured the majority of the plaudits across the Arsenal fanbase post-match.Instead, this honour has been reserved for a member of the Gunners’ backline. The player in question? William Saliba. The three-year long wait to see stopper Saliba in competitive action in Arsenal colours was finally brought to an end on Friday, upon the Frenchman being afforded a starting berth at the heart of Mikel Arteta’s backline. And to say that he subsequently went on to repay the faith of his manager would be something of an understatement. In his spot on the right of the visitors’ central defensive pairing, Saliba stood up to the test when his side needed him most, fully deserving of his eventual Man of the Match prize. In turn, the social media love-in has since been understandably widespread, with just some of the highlights from across Twitter showcased below:Can we talk about how good Saliba is pls, blokes a fucking rock— Quinton Smith (@QuintonSmith007) August 5, 2022 It’s great to be able to win games like this. We were pegged back but Saliba held us together and we nick on at the other end to kill it— MJB (@nitramyhporb) August 5, 2022 William Saliba. That’s it, that’s the tweet.— Daniel Jinks (@Daniel_JINKS) August 5, 2022 William Saliba is honestly like a new £60 million signing… absolute rolls royce— Bhavs (@bhavss14) August 5, 2022 William Saliba is a special footballer. Unbelievable defender.— AFCTALK (@AFCTalk0) August 5, 2022 Saliba MOTM. Hard not to be excited by him.— Frankie Hobbs (@Frankie_Hobbs) August 5, 2022 William Saliba with a MOTM display on his Premier league debut. How many 21 year old central defenders can do it at this level on their debut at a tough away ground like Selhurst Park? Not many. A world class talent who will go on to become one of the best in this coming decade.— Sash ~ (@ltarsenal) August 5, 2022 Read more:Premier League 2022/23 season prediction10 best defenders to pick for your 2022/23 Fantasy Premier League side
