Why Real Madrid are looking to pay over €100m for Kylian Mbappe despite him potentially being available for free next year

Mbappe’s PSG stint Kylian Mbappe would make the move to PSG in 2017. The Parisians first signed the youngster on a season-long loan from Monaco for the 2017/18 campaign.

The deal included a clause that allowed PSG to purchase Mbappe permanently for a fee believed to be around £166m, which they of course did.

Mbappe has since gone on to feature 174 times for the French powerhouse, netting 133 goals and providing 63 assists along the way.

And, after Lionel Messi signed for the club this summer, PSG’s fans were no doubt eager to see Messi, Mbappe and Neymar all link up.

Reports stemming from France on Tuesday morning suggested that it is increasingly likely that the attacker will be sold to Real Madrid this summer.

This was followed by claims on Tuesday evening that Madrid had offered €160m for Mbappe:

BREAKING: Real Madrid have made a £160million bid to sign Kylian Mbappe.

He has told PSG he wants to leave.

That bid is said to have been rejected. However, a transfer for the 22-year-old now looks to be close.

Marca would report on Thursday evening that Mbappe to Madrid was imminent, after Real offered €170m plus an extra €10m in add-ons.

Whilst Mbappe is of course a remarkable talent, some may be questioning why Los Blancos are willing to pay so much this summer, given his current contract situation.

The World Cup winner is now in the final 12 months of his PSG deal, meaning he could leave for free in 2022, after signing a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs as early as January.

So, why don’t Real just wait to do this, and save themselves over €100m?

Well, L’Equipe have moved to provide an explanation, claiming that Los Blancos are willing to pay nine figures for Mbappe now due to fears of Premier League competition in pre-contract negotiations next January:

Madrid sources tell L’Équipe that the reasoning for seeking to pay 9 figures for Kylian Mbappé when they could offer him a pre-contract in just 4 months time is that they fear Premier League competition in pre-contract negotiations next January if a deal isn’t done this summer.
