Why Nicolas Pepe is missing for Arsenal vs Manchester City

Man City vs Arsenal The weekend’s Premier League action is set to get underway shortly.

The first outing of the day will see Manchester City play host to Arsenal.

The Gunners have had something of a nightmare start to 2020/21 and it is unlikely to ease this weekend.

The Gunners began their campaign with a 2-0 loss to newly promoted Brentford. They were then dominated and once again beaten 2-0 by Chelsea last time out.

And now, Mikel Arteta’s side must face off with current Premier League champions, Manchester City, at the Etihad.

The north Londoners do not have a great recent record against the Citizens, losing 1-0, 4-1 and 1-0 in their previous three encounters.

Why Pepe missed Man City clash Ahead of the game, both sides would release their starting line-ups an hour before kick-off.

And Arsenal’s starting XI would certainly get people talking. Mikel Arteta appears to be lining up with a back-three that looks set to see Sead Kolasinac used as a centre-back and one of Emile Smith Rowe or Martin Odegaard used as a partner for Granit Xhaka:

When the squad was announced, once noticeable omission was Nicolas Pepe.

The Ivorian played in midweek vs West Brom and did not appear to pick up an injury, so his absence did seem odd.

However, Arsenal have since confirmed that Pepe is missing from the matchday squad as he is unwell:

‘Unwell’ was also the reason Arsenal gave for Ben White, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette missing games this season and all three of them would later be confirmed to have had Covid-19.
