Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and United’s dressing room leaders would have expected their side to continue the early season momentum they had built by beating Young Boys.
But the nature of the last gasp defeat following Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s red card will hurt, but we cannot afford any time to feel sorry for ourselves.
United travel to unbeaten West Ham United on Sunday in what will be a difficult game despite David Moyes’ side being without star man Michail Antonio.
Solskjaer will want his players to respond at The London Stadium and to ensure the blip in Switzerland doesn’t turn into anything more.
Luckily for the Norwegian, he will be able to call upon several leaders to lift the dressing room.
United’s leaders and serial winners will rally troops
The summer signings of Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo give United’s dressing room an injection of a winning mentality, but also a calm and reassuring presence to look to when things get tough.
Alongside captain Harry Maguire, Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes, United’s team now has a spine of winners and leaders.
So for the likes of Jesse Lingard, Wan-Bissaka and Jadon Sancho who all endured a difficult evening in Switzerland, United’s senior men will lift them up and tell them to forget about last night.
United cannot afford to dwell, failure to win on Sunday will probably result in a number of pundits claiming we’re still not ready to win big trophies.
But if we go to West Ham and win convincingly then Solskjaer’s side will be praised for showing character and resilience.
Expect a response
With a Carabao Cup tie against West Ham at Old Trafford three days after the league clash, Solskjaer will unleash all his big hitters to ensure we stay top of the league.
Ronaldo and Varane are world class players, but they have been accustomed to winning all of their careers, they no how to deal with the expectancy of success.
This United team is no longer soft centred or lacking leaders and no one more than Ronaldo will want to make that statement come Sunday.
