Under manager Erik ten Hag Shaw and Malacia have not been able to sustain consistent playing time making the need for a dependable player in this position imperative. Manchester Uniteds defense has been a major source of difficulties this season.

Ten Hag has had to use players like Casemiro, Diogo Dalot and Sofyan Amrabat in positions that aren’t their natural ones due to injuries in order to fill defensive voids. Malacia is still without a confirmed return date to the field of play despite a video that appeared in April showing him working out in the gym. Almost a year ago he made his final appearance for the team against Fulham in the Premier League.

The club’s new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is another person driving the need to bolster the defense.
