Why Manchester United appointing Zinedine Zidane could cause Pep Guardiola further ‘suffering’ – Manchester Evening News

Zinedine Zidane is no stranger to Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola following clashes during both their managerial and playing careers and Manchester United’s potential appointment of the former could mean the continued “suffering” of the latter.

The former Real Madrid manager is one of the names linked with succeeding Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the Old Trafford helm after Manchester United’s recent run of form edged the Norwegian closer to the managerial chopping block.

Guardiola, whose side inflicted further misery on the Reds with an easy 2-0 win at the Theatre of Dreams, has previously gushed over Zidane after the pair faced off last year.

He detailed the conversation that the pair had after his City side beat Los Blancos in the Champions League, taking advantage of two Raphael Varane mistakes in a 4-2 aggregate win.

In their only other meeting, the former Barcelona head coach got the advantage over Zidane, but he detailed the difficulty he faced during his playing career against Zizou.

He said: “I congratulated him for La Liga. I always said to win the league is the most difficult title because it shows 11 months being there.

“We spoke about our families and I wished him all the best. He was one of my idols when I was a player.

“I played against him in the national team with France and I suffered a lot.

“He was one of the greatest and as a human being he is an example and I like how he can represent our profession like he does.”

Zidane is amongst the bookmakers’ favourites to take over from Solskjaer, with Brendan Rodgers also favoured by some.
