‘When I look’ – Erik ten Hag signing asked himself poignant seven-word question over Man Utd transfer, he finally has an answer

Andre Onana has revealed that he asked himself an all-important question after he left Inter Milan last summer and signed for Manchester United.

The 28-year-old Manchester United No 1 arrived at Old Trafford ahead of the current campaign and was reunited with manager Erik ten Hag at the Red Devils.

Andre Onana had played under Erik ten Hag at Ajax and the Cameroonian had impressed at the Dutch club ahead of his transfer to Inter Milan in 2022.

The former Ajax and Inter star had a successful spell at the San Siro last season, including being a key part of the Serie A club’s Champions League run.

United agreed a hefty £47.2m deal to bring Onana from the Italian club to Old Trafford after Erik ten Hag sought a replacement for David de Gea.

Club legend David de Gea, who is still a free agent, made his exit from United at the end of last season after talks over a new deal broke down.

Onana talks Man Utd and transfer

Andre Onana has firmly established himself as Manchester United No 1, but the Red Devils star endured a tricky start to life at Old Trafford.

The Cameroon international was forced to weather the storm at United after being placed under the spotlight for his mistakes, including in the Champions League.

While Onana has had howlers against the likes of Galatasaray and Bayern Munich earlier this season, Erik ten Hag had kept faith with the former Ajax star.

Onana has now admitted that he would ask himself if he made the “right choice” with his move to Old Trafford after his “really hard” start to life at United.

“Yeah, it was really hard [to start off with] but it’s the first time I faced such a situation,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“Now I know the league, I know the people, I know the country, I know Manchester – okay, Rainchester!

“When I look back now, I’m just smiling because it was a big lesson for me.

“But in the beginning, I was like, ‘Wow, did I make the right choice?’ But I’m definitely 100 per cent sure I made the right choice because Manchester United is the bigger club in this country, it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“Who would say no to come to play for this beautiful club?”

Onana sends message about Man Utd season

Irrespective of his own mistakes between the sticks, Onana insisted that United, as a whole, have had a “difficult” Premier League campaign.

The Red Devils are now unable to make the Premier League top four and will be without Champions League football for the following campaign.

United could still end the season on a high note if the Premier League club can dethrone defending FA Cup champions Manchester City in the cup final this month.

“The whole season has been a difficult season for all of us, as an individual, as a group,” Onana said.

“But we always have to stay positive because I don’t think we lost the place in Europe against Burnley and we all have to take responsibility; I start with myself, always.

“It has been a difficult season. If you put everything on the table, you can speak about a lot of things, like injuries, players, about bad luck. But we are Manchester United, we are such a big club, so we cannot talk about that.

“We have to stay positive. The game last week is gone. [Be] positive, and if the season is not the best one, I’m sure the coming one will be better.”
