Cristiano Ronaldo teased his return to Manchester United before it was officially announced.

United pulled off the transfer story of the summer – which is some going considering Lionel Messi left Barcelona – by swooping in ahead of neighbours Manchester City to bring Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.

On Thursday it looked as though the 36-year-old would be joining City as they looked for a striker alternative after being unable to sign Harry Kane.

However, the Manchester Evening News understands that Sir Alex Ferguson rang Ronaldo on Friday morning to discuss returning to United instead and the club quickly struck a deal with Juventus.

The move is still subject to a medical which will be held in Lisbon and Ronaldo touched down in Portugal at around 4:30pm.

Upon leaving the airport the 36-year-old was swamped by journalists, paparazzi and supporters alike as they tried to hear from the forward.

Portuguese publication B24 managed to get a brief word from Ronaldo in which he said that his next club will be revealed within an hour.

“In an hour they’ll know where I’m playing,” he said.

Before the hour had even passed, United officially announced the signing which briefly crashed their own website.

MEN Sport understands that United have agreed a transfer fee in the region of €28million with Juventus to sign Ronaldo.

It’s understood that the Old Lady still owe money on the €100m fee they agreed to sign Ronaldo for in 2018 and want it covered by United. The deal has been described by sources privy to negotiations as ‘amortised’.
