BACK David Tully Jun 19th 2024 Manchester United have “advanced” their interest in Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee, according to The Athletic‘s David Ornstein. The trusted journalist claims that “dialogue” with the player’s camp has taken place, although the Red Devils have yet to begin discussions with his club. Zirkzee has a €40m (£34m) release clause in his contract and, when fans were asked on X whether the forward would be a good addition to the squad, the majority agreed: His price is cool. We need to sign him — Ghana Yesu (@GhanaYesu_) June 19, 2024 Credible option — mikrafone (@Mike51021188) June 19, 2024 YES! Absolute genius dribbler with height and physically! I’m still rubbing my eyes at that bargain release clause! — Srinjoy Chakravarty (@xchakravarty) June 19, 2024 Yes, said it last window we need him — C. Dragon (@crobaxdragon) June 19, 2024 Tall, skilful and strong – seems a good backup striker to Hojlund. Hearing he drops into play instead of stating up as a traditional #9. However that might work quite nicely in our system. #goodsigning — The United Perspective. (@ManUTDPercepti1) June 19, 2024 Hell yes — COX❤ (@IhuomaEziuche) June 19, 2024 He wouldn’t have been my 1st choice striker to sign but he seems a really good striker who is young, a great price & will get better under the management & coaching of ten Hag. Don’t want to pay the silly agent fees though. — Daniel(SDMN) (@TheYOLOArtist) June 19, 2024 United are still not considered favourites for Zirkzee’s signature While Ornstein has confirmed that Erik ten Hag’s side are exploring a move for the Dutchman, fellow reporter Fabrizio Romano says AC Milan remain in pole position to buy them. The Rossoneri have an agreement on personal terms with Zirkzee and have informed Bologna of their intention to trigger the clause. However, the deal is being held up by his agent Kia Joorabchian, who is keen to get a substantial fee from the transfer. It means there is a chance that United (or potentially Arsenal) could hijack the deal. Are the club pursuing other strikers? RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko was a player that the Red Devils had a longstanding interest in but he has opted to remain in Germany for another season. Brentford’s Ivan Toney and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins have been mentioned as other options, but the strongest links (other than Zirkzee) have been with Wolves’ Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian spoke out about his future last week. Watch Football and Sport programmes on Shots! here David Tully David has worked as a football reporter for the last fifteen years.
