Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has arrived in Italy to complete a medical ahead of his loan move to Napoli.
A Good Deal for All Parties
After enjoying a positive debut season at Old Trafford, Hojlund’s form in a red shirt was utterly abject last year with the Denmark international scoring just four goals in the Premier League.
His all-round play was even worse, often being ignored by his teammates such was their lack of faith in passing him the ball.
Ruben Amorim had remained steadfast in starting Hojlund as the frontman in the final months of a dismal campaign for the Red Devils.
However, this was mainly driven by an injury to Joshua Zirkzee and the fact that 17-year-old wonderkid Chido Obi was not registered for the Europa League – the only competition which mattered for United last year.
Hojlund retained the starting berth up front during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States this summer.
But the arrival of Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig – a striker with the same age and profile of Hojlund – quickly relegated the Dane to the stands, with Amorim wasting no time in making it clear where he now stood within the squad.
This led Hojlund, who had initially expressed his intent to remain at fight for his place at Old Trafford, to reconsider an exit in the final days of the summer window.
Napoli, reeling from the news of a long-term injury to first-choice striker Romelu Lukaku, moved quickly to strike a loan deal with United for the 22-year-old. The Serie A champions will pay a €6 million loan fee with a €44 million buy option which becomes “mandatory under certain conditions,” Fabrizio Romano reveals.
United are shifting a player with no future under Amorim, either in the short-term or the long, in a deal which could prove a major boost financially next summer. Napoli are receiving a desperately needed striker who has previously shone in Italy. And Hojlund is joining a title-winning club, who will compete in the Champions League this season, under a manager famed for getting the best out of physical number nines in Antonio Conte.
It’s a rare moment in football where a move constitutes a great deal for all parties.
Hojlund arrives for a medical
Hojlund was spotted arriving in Rome today to complete a medical at the Villa Stuart Clinic, a private hospital often used by football clubs.

The Dane was welcomed by a group of fans in Napoli shirts and entered the clinic with a big smile on his face.
The medical is expected to be a formality as Hojlund enjoyed a full pre-season but is yet to face a single minute of competitive football this season.
Napoli beat Cagliari 1-0 in the dying moments of yesterday’s Serie A match at the Diego Armanda Maradona stadium.
The international break means club football will take a fourteen day pause now, with the Neapolitan club’s next fixture coming away to Fiorentina, giving Hojlund the prospect of making his debut in blue against former teammate David De Gea.
