Video: Amorim singles out one huge positive he noticed despite frustrating draw vs. Lyon

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has pinpointed a silver lining in his side’s disappointing draw to French outfit Olympique Lyonnais.

Andre Onana misjudged a Thiago Almada free-kick in the first half, as the ball bounced into the back of his own net. Leny Yoro equalised at the stroke of half-time before substitute Joshua Zirkzee turned the game on its head in the 88th minute.

It looked like the Red Devils were headed for a big away win, but Onana made another costly mistake in stoppage time as he palmed a close-range shot out to Lyon forward Rayan Cherki, who punished his error.

Amorim spoke to TNT Sports after the match and gave his verdict on the result and his team’s performance.

He said, “Of course, we are really disappointed. We should have taken a one-goal advantage to the next game but we have the next game at home and we’ll try to win that.”

Amorim remarked about Onana’s mistakes, “The important thing is to focus on the next game in the league and then think about the second leg.”

“Against Lyon, when one player has a mistake, all the team has a mistake so we continue like that.”

On whether Onana retains his faith or a change between the sticks will be made, Amorim answered, “No we continue to do the same thing. Training, seeing the games, trying to choose the best eleven to win every match.”

“I think we did well. In the first half we had some difficulties, especially in the beginning to press the opponent because they play in a different way but then especially in the second half, we adapted and controlled the game.”

“We were near Lyon’s box, so I think we did well but we can do better.”

Amorim insisted that his philosophy is starting to take shape and the patterns of play are slowly becoming evident.

“We are improving game by game but we need to be more clinical but again, it’s two games. This is just half-time. We have to think about the next one.”

Asked how his players can become more clinical, Amorim replied, “It’s to put the ball in the net, that’s all. We are improving, so let’s continue to think like that and to work.”

“We have a Premier League game on Sunday against a top team and then we have time to think about the second leg.”

“When one player makes a mistake, all the team makes a mistake so we continue like this”.
