Victor Lindelof has heaped the praise on young Man United defender, Willy Kambwala.

Manchester United have never shied away from giving young players a chance, though this season, teenagers have been forced into the limelight at Old Trafford due to the horrendous injury situation at the Theatre of Dreams.

This season, Willy Kambwala has given his first start away at West Ham United. That chance probably came a little earlier than Erik ten Hag would have liked, though the centre-back acquitted himself well.

For Kambwala, it’s now about earning those opportunities on a consistent basis. With United’s defenders suddenly looking like an ageing group, don’t be surprised if we see the teenager again before the end of the season.

Ahead of the season run-in, Victor Lindelof has labelled the young United defender a ‘great talent’, singling out Kambwala for praise during a recent club interview. The Ice Man stated that his defensive partner has a ‘great future ahead’, it’s just about honing that talent.

When asked directly about Willy Kambwala, this was the Ice Man’s response:

“Well, I think he is a great talent, obviously very young, but I think he’s got a great future ahead of him. And I think when it comes to players like that, it’s just, you know, talking to them and making them understand what they have to do.” Lindelof said in an exclusive club interview.

Kambwala plays with a real maturity. He’s more than good enough with the ball at feet, willing to carry it forward if the opportunity arises. He’s a big strong kid who can compete with the physical forwards, while also being solid aerially.

It’s fair to say he has all the attributes to go right the way to the top. As Lindelof talked about, it’s just about learning from the players around you, continuing to develop your own skills and looking to constantly grow day-in-day-out.

Plenty of transfer talk has been about a possible centre-back signing this summer, but in Kambwala, United could have the ready-made partner for Lisandro Martinez in the long term.

No doubt we’ll see plenty of Kambwala during the upcoming pre-season tour – and I cannot wait to see him adapt and evolve.
