United’s “top candidate” to replace Amorim blows his chance with “fiery personality” terrifying INEOS – report

Manchester United’s assessment of Oliver Glasner as a leading candidate to take the reins at Old Trafford this summer has dramatically changed over the past few weeks, according to a new report. Long-Term Successor The Red Devils brought an end to Ruben Amorim’s tumultuous tenure earlier this month after a breakdown in his relationship with the club’s hierarchy. Michael Carrick has taken charge as caretaker manager until the end of the season, with INEOS set to decide upon a long-term successor for the Portuguese coach over the summer. Carrick was not thought to be a prospective candidate for the role, given his inexperience at the top level of English and European football. However, the former midfielder has overseen one of the club’s best weeks in memory, with back-to-back victories over Manchester City and Arsenal creating a clamour for him to be given the job full-time. INEOS are understood to be considering other targets, with Glasner chief among them, though Carrick cannot be ruled out as an option – especially if he helps secure Champions League football next season. Whoever is ultimately selected will need to pay homage to the principles which underpin the club; the ‘DNA’ at the Theatre of Dreams which Amorim failed to capture during his 14 months in Manchester. However, the emotional stability to handle the pressure of the United hotseat will also be a key attribute, an area Amorim routinely fell foul of with a number of impulsive outbursts – which is why Glasner’s behaviour at Selhurst Park has “jeopardised his chances” of replacing the Portuguese. Amorim 2.0 Sports Boom reveals INEOS have downgraded the 51-year-old coach on their wish list after growing “concerned” at his public criticism of Palace’s board, given the obvious parallel with Amorim’s actions. “Although Old Trafford chiefs have not entirely ruled the Austrian out of the race to be named Ruben Amorim’s permanent successor, our sources have been told they are concerned by his recent decision to call out Eagles chief Steve Parish and his associates following a disagreement over transfer policy.” There is even a belief that Glasner’s outbursts can be “interpreted…as a ‘come-and-get-me’ plea” to United, with INEOS worried his “fiery personality is not suited to life at a club where even seemingly inconsequential events are subjected to the most intense scrutiny.” This has led the Eagles’ boss to “slip down the list of candidates being considered for one of the highest profile roles in world football.” The pressure of taking the helm at Old Trafford is one few coaches are prepared for, particularly if they have not managed at a club with the expectation of challenging for trophies before. While Glasner’s time at Selhurst Park has won him many admirers across English football, including the red half of Manchester, the way the Austrian has handled his protracted exit appears to have largely undone this outstanding work.
