United’s January transfer plans for Baleba hit snag as club is rocked by twin setback – report

Carlos Baleba

Manchester United’s hopes of landing Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba in January have suffered a significant hit following the latest update on his situation.

United interested in Baleba

During the summer transfer window, United explored the signing of Baleba but a move failed to get over the line.

United spent most of their budget on bolstering their attacking department, bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko for more than £200m.

The Red Devils identified Baleba as their preferred transfer target but Brighton’s excessive valuation meant that negotiations could not advance.

Brighton chairman Tony Bloom recently confirmed that they knocked back an approach from United for Baleba. Bloom also acknowledged that Brighton will likely need to cash in on some of their top talents, meaning a future sale of the Cameroonian midfielder remains a strong possibility.

United are still interested in Baleba, who is also believed to be keen on joining Ruben Amorim’s ranks. It’s been a quiet start to the season for the midfielder and Fabian Hürzeler confessed that United’s interest might have turned his head.

There have been suggestions that United may look to pursue Baleba as early as the January window, with speculation growing after claims that the midfielder intends to ask Brighton to let him leave.

However, according to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, there is no chance that Brighton will let him go. Baleba is also believed to be happy at the Amex.

Baleba update issued

Crook reveals, “talkSPORT has been told Brighton have no plans to cash in on United target Carlos Baleba this side of next summer.”

“Suggestions the 21-year-old is unhappy on the Sussex coast and is pushing for a transfer have also been played down.”

Baleba is not the only midfielder on United’s radar.

Alternatives to the 21-year-old include Jobe Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund) and Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace).
