United women held to stalemate against huge rivals in latest pre-season outing

Manchester United Women continued their preparations for the season with a 0-0 draw with Manchester City.

United had won their first game 2-0 against Aston Villa.

Early City possession

The match was played over three 20 minutes periods and Manchester City dominated the first period of the game as the Reds struggled to get a foothold in the match.

Despite the Blues’ possession, they didn’t really manage to create many chances against a solid United defence.

In fact, it was United who had the first half chance of the game as Jayde Riviere fired a low cross across goal but there was just too much on it in the end.

United grow into the game

Simi Awujo, who impressed so much in the World Sevens tournament in May, drove forward and had a long range shot well stopped by the City keeper.

Moments later, Lily Murphy was responsible for the home side’s first real chance but Hinata Miyazawa expertly cleared the ball away.

Just before the end of the first period, Phallon Tullis-Joyce got down well to stop a certain goal from a City corner.

New signing Julia Zigiotti was introduced in the second period of play and was an impressive addition to the middle of the park.

Leah Galton came the closest for the Red Devils but her powerful effort flew over the crossbar.

Elisabeth Terland was also a whisker away from scoring but had her shot well saved by the City goalkeeper.

The game ended with the scores all level in what was an excellent test ahead of the new season.

Next task

The women will be in action once again when they take on Real Betis next Saturday in Marbella.
