United to make improved bid for Branthwaite after lowballing Everton – whose response was firm

Manchester United are expected to make an improved bid for Everton central defender Jarrad Branthwaite after their first bid of £34 million plus a further £8 million in add ons was rejected by the Merseyside club – despite United reportedly agreeing personal terms with the player.

The proposal, which broke on Friday after reports on Thursday evening about the agreement on personal terms, was deemed unacceptable by Everton, which is right as the offer was pretty low for the player. Everton reportedly value Branthwaite closer to £75 million – which is ludicrous.

The 21-year-old narrowly missed out on an England place for the European Championships in Germany this summer, with England facing Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday evening. Branthwaite made 41 appearances for Everton during the 2023/24 season, scoring three goals.

Everton have endured financial problems over the course of the season, which saw a points deduction in the Premier League, which they battled and avoided relegation. The club is not going to have a fire-sale so will be seeking to get close to their valuation for the player.

It is reported that United manager Erik ten Hag wants Branthwaite to partner in the centre of the defence with Lisandro Martinez, which has the potential to be a great partnership and they could reach the level Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic did for United – which would be great.

With United reportedly agreeing personal terms with Branthwaite, he has been offered a weekly wage in the region of £150,000 to £160,000 to sign for United, which shows just how much they value the 21-year-old who could help spearhead United’s defence – which is much-needed.

Former Arsenal and England striker Ian Wright has hailed Branthwaite stating that he would be a huge asset for any Premier League club. Wright said: “Pace? Oh, brilliant. Reading of the game? Fantastic. Attacking the ball? brilliant in both boxes. Passing out…”

It is clear that United have found the player that they would like to sign this summer in Branthwaite, but they will need to put in a more favourable bid for Everton to accept. They have had dealings with Everton in the past with Wayne Rooney and Marouane Fellaini both signing in the last 20 years.
