Southampton Director of Football Jason Wilcox handed in his resignation on Monday, according to multiple reports, which could open the door for Manchester United to swoop in for someone the INEOS group see as a potential prize addition to the new club leadership structure.

Jason Wilcox has resigned from Southampton — he’s set to join Manchester United as new technical director!

Wilcox, a Premier League winner with Blackburn Rovers in 1995, has made a successful career for himself as a coach and director since retiring as a player in 2006. He joined the Academy setup at Manchester City as a coach in 2012 and oversaw two FA Youth Cup Final wins before ascending to the Academy Director role in 2017.

Wilcox was announced as Director of Football at Southampton in January, 2023, but has been a target of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ownership team since the takeover was confirmed at the start of the New Year.

Wilcox’s resignation leaves the door open for United to approach the highly-touted director for a role in the new regime without negotiating with Southampton. If he does join the club, he and current Newcastle United director Dan Ashworth could form a good foundation for United. Setting a philosophy and standard for scouting and recruiting is something the club has desperately lacked in recent years, and this could be the beginning of positive change in that area.
