BACK David Tully Oct 16th 2023 Manchester United centre-back Victor Lindelof says he expects his club to extend his contract for an extra year. The Swedish international’s current deal expires at the end of the season, but the Red Devils can unilaterally trigger an option to keep him for another 12 months, and Lindelof told Fotbollskanalen (quotes via Sport Witness) that his club are “quite likely” to do that: “That’s more than I heard [about my contract situation]. But I have an option [for another] year and there is a deadline for it. When exactly I don’t know. But it feels quite likely that it will be activated.” Lindelof has started 7 games in all competitions already this season. He remains a key part of manager Erik ten Hag’s first-team plans so you can’t see the Red Devils allowing him to leave on a free transfer. The United defender has been linked with a move to Italy AC Milan have been mentioned as potential suitors for Lindelof over the past couple of weeks with the Serie A club considering their options as they look to replace Simon Kjaer. However, it appears as though the United centre-half has no interest in leaving Old Trafford. In his interview with Fotbollskanalen, he also stated that he was enjoying his time at United, despite the difficult start to the season. Should United consider replacing Lindelof? The Manchester side’s defensive record has been pretty poor so far this campaign, with Lindelof having started the 3-2 loss to Galatasaray in the Champions League as well as the 3-1 league defeats to Arsenal and Brighton. There is an argument to be made for selling Lindelof next summer, even if his contract is extended. United are said to be on the lookout for a new centre-half, with the likes of Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo, Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba, Benfica’s Antonio Silva and Sporting Lisbon’s Goncalo Inacio all reportedly on the club’s radar.
