United set to miss out on perfect midfield plan B as Forest close in on surprise deal – report

Manchester United look set to miss out on another midfield target as Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz’s future is close to being settled.

Luiz interest

It was reported earlier in the summer that the Red Devils had been offered Luiz as part of a Jadon Sancho swap in July.

Nonetheless, no deal came to pass and Luiz has since kicked up a fuss to leave Turin.

He refused to return to pre-season training and is understood to want a transfer back to England after spending five years at Aston Villa.

Premier League competition

The Red Devils have faced serious competition from their Premier League rivals as Everton and West Ham United have both shown keen interest in the midfielder.

So far, United have been able to stay in the race as nobody has been able to match Juventus’ €40m valuation.

Nottingham Forest race ahead

This is about to change though as United’s rivals Nottingham Forest, who have been chasing the Brazilian all summer, have raced into the lead.

According to Italian website Calciomercato, “Juventus and Forest have scheduled talks for the weekend and the deal could be finalized by early next week.”

Crucially, “unlike all the clubs that have approached him so far, Nottingham Forest have submitted an initial official offer to Juventus for a permanent transfer. According to journalist Matteo Moretto, the figure is more than €30 million, and Juventus is willing to listen.”

It is stated that the deal is entering “crucial days” as the Old Lady attempt to finalise a deal that would be crucial for their transfer market as they are still in pursuit of striker Randal Kolo Muani.

With United missing out on Carlos Baleba, they will likely turn to other targets such as Morten Hjulmand, Adam Wharton or Ederson.

Nonetheless, Luiz also provides an option with Premier League experience and they will need to act quickly if they are to fight their way back into the race for the 27-year-old.
