United set for major payday as Mason Greenwood agrees big-money exit from Marseille – Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United are set to receive a significant windfall from Mason Greenwood’s proposed move to Turkish side Fenerbahce, according to Fabrizio Romano. Marseille ready to cash in After serious legal troubles left the Red Devils with no choice but to sell Greenwood, despite the charges against him being dropped, the 24-year-old forward joined Olympique Marseille in the summer of 2024. Having agreed a five-year contract with the Ligue 1 giants, the £26.6 million deal for Greenwood included a significant sell-on clause, understood to be 50% of the profits from any future sale. While the Bradford native has certainly impressed in front of goal at the Stade Vélodrome, returning 48 goals and 17 assists in just 81 appearances, issues off the pitch have continued to plague him. There have been reports of clashes with Marseille’s coaching staff and executive branch, and there was enormous backlash in the French city itself when he was signed. This controversy has followed him since, with Liverpool fans loudly booing him during their Champions League clash in January. Despite his outstanding record in the final third, Marseille were willing to listen to offers this summer, provided a suitable valuation was met. This has sparked interest from AS Roma, Atletico Madrid and, most strongly, Fenerbahce. Fenerbahce advancing a deal Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano reveals Greenwood is “very, very close” to joining Fenerbahce. The Yellow Canaries have sent an “official bid” to Marseille worth in the region of €40 million (£34m). The Italian transfer expert stresses there is “continued negotiation on the final details of this package”. However, Greenwood’s camp have “informed Fenerbahce they accepted the contract terms offered until June 2030”, and the move is understood to be at an advanced stage. Interestingly, Atletico made a number of calls in recent weeks to assess whether a deal could be struck, but the Spanish giants decided against escalating their interest. Roma never made an offer, despite Greenwood being a key target in the Italian capital. Romano claims Manchester United will “get a percentage of the deal, and it is going to be in excess of €6-7 million, so right under €10m” (£8.5m). This is a major boost to the budget at Old Trafford at a time when the club’s plan this summer is beginning to show signs of fragility. United have already agreed a £39m deal for Atalanta enforcer Ederson, while Andrey Santos has now been signed from Chelsea for a fee totalling £50m, though both moves are subject to successful medicals. The Red Devils remain on the hunt for a ‘marquee’ midfielder, however, with a suitable replacement for Casemiro considered their priority. Aurelien Tchouameni remains the “dream target”, but a pursuit of the Real Madrid superstar will be expensive – which is why a cash injection from Greenwood’s transfer will be music to INEOS’s ears.
