United pushing to sign €50m-rated wing-back who has more league goals than Hojlund and Zirkzee combined – report

Manchester United are interested in signing Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries, as per reports.

It is still early days but Patrick Dorgu’s arrival has underlined that attacking full-backs could greatly improve Ruben Amorim’s system, which relies heavily on wing-backs to create width and chances in the final third.

His recent suspension has once again forced Amorim to place his trust in Diogo Dalot to play as a left sided wing-back. The Portuguese impressed as a traditional full-back under Erik ten Hag but he doesn’t have the physicality to get up and down the flank in the current setup.

Amorim could certainly do with another new signing to strengthen the area and it seems United are exploring the market to find a new wing-back.

Manchester United want Denzel Dumfries

According to Fichajes, United have stepped up their interest in Dumfries, who is also being followed by Arsenal and Chelsea.

The Dutchman was heavily linked with the Red Devils during Ten Hag’s reign but United eventually signed Noussair Mazraoui to address their right-back area.

Mazraoui has also struggled to play as a wing-back, leading to Amorim mostly using him as a centre-back in his back three.

Dumfries, meanwhile, is regarded as one of the best wing-backs in Europe, having impressed with his pace and positional awareness under Simone Inzaghi.

The 28-year-old has managed an impressive six goals and two assists in Serie A this term, underlining his attacking threat. In comparison, United strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have scored a combined five league goals this season.

Dumfries is tied to Inter until the summer of 2028 but it is claimed that the Nerazzurri are prepared to part ways with him for a fee in the region of €50 million.

The Spanish outlet claim his exit from Serie A “seems increasingly likely” amid interest from Premier League clubs.

Having said that, it is tough to see United committing such a figure on a second new wing-back when there are many other concerning positions that need strengthening in the summer.
