United preparing £52m bid for 26-yo Saudi Pro League star as Amorim demands January signing – report

Manchester United have stepped up their interest in Al-Qadsiah striker Mateo Retegui.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming Retegui is on United’s list of targets heading into the January transfer window.

The 26-year-old striker left Atalanta in favour of a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia in the summer. Still, he continues to pique the interest of clubs across Europe with his goalscoring prowess.

Retegui is an elite number nine

Early this week, the Argentina-born Italian scored a brace in Italy’s 3-0 win over Israel.

Known for his explosive runs into the channels and ruthless ball-striking, Retegui finished as the top scorer in Serie A last season with 25 goals.

The ex-Tigre talisman was also the 2022 Argentine Primera División top goalscorer.

The centre forward has had a prolific start to life in the Saudi Pro League as well, having notched three goals in four appearances.

Man United expected to make a January move

According to Fichajes, United are considering an offer of around €60m (£52.2m) to sign Retegui, as Ruben Amorim needs more attacking depth.

United recruited Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig in a deal worth €85m in the summer. The 22-year-old has looked promising in his early time at Old Trafford, but Amorim wants to add a striker with a proven track record of rattling the net.

Further, Joshua Zirkzee, the only other senior striker at United has supposedly fallen out of favour with Amorim, who is yet to hand him a start this season. The Dutchman is thought to be “deeply frustrated” in Manchester.

The Spanish outlet claim there is an expectation that United will make a formal offer in January if Retegui maintains his form.

The ex-Atalanta frontman signed a four-year contract with Al-Qadsiah in July. As such, it would take a significant effort to secure his services in the upcoming winter window.
