United plot raid for “astonishing” 24-yo midfield monster, club open to sale to avoid losing him for free next year – report

Manchester United have been exploring the market for a new midfielder.

Ruben Amorim is eager to strengthen his side’s midfield ahead of the new season, and has set his sights on Carlos Baleba.

Baleba is viewed as Amorim’s dream midfield signing. However, Brighton & Hove Albion’s reluctance to part ways with their midfielder has made any deal highly unlikely.

The Seagulls are expected to demand north of £100 million for the Cameroon international. Accordingly, the club’s hierarchy have recently shown interest in an Eredivisie midfielder.

Manchester United earmark Timber as potential target

According to FootballTransfers, United are “closely monitoring” Feyenoord star Quinten Timber as a possible alternative to Baleba.

Timber has just one year remaining on his current contract at Feyenoord, who may be “willing to sanction a sale this summer if they receive a suitable bid” to avoid losing him on a free transfer in 2026.

It is understood that Amorim favours a move for Baleba, but United are concerned that a deal could lead to PSR issues.

The Red Devils have already spent more than £200m on incomings during the summer transfer window.

Timber considered better fit than Baleba

Further, several figures at United believe Timber “may actually be a better tactical fit” than Baleba.

The “astonishing” Dutch midfielder is known for his quick thinking and efficiency. The 24-year-old always attempts to find his teammates up front without taking too many touches.

Akin to Baleba, Timber covers ground well and is very robust in his tackling. He also shields the ball well and should be comfortable dealing with the physicality of the Premier League.

However, United have preferred to sign Premier League-proven talent this summer. As such, they are likely to keep pursuing a deal for Baleba until it becomes untenable.
