United open talks to beat Liverpool to blockbuster signing, club ready to sanction €95m deal – report

Heading into the winter transfer window, Manchester United’s midfield was considered the biggest issue for Ruben Amorim’s side.  Amorim departed and Michael Carrick stepped in to replace him on the touchline. Still, United’s midfield options remain the same, as the club’s hierarchy were reluctant to make short-term signings mid-season. United’s preferred targets, Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba and Adam Wharton, all Premier League-proven midfielders, were not available for sale in January. The Red Devils now plan to sign at least one of the trio in the summer.  Crystal Palace set price tag for Adam Wharton According to Fichajes, United have “already begun preliminary talks” to sign Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton.  Liverpool and Real Madrid have also entered the race to sign the England international, who is considered the most technically gifted midfielder in the country. The 21-year-old’s contract in South London runs until 2029. However, he is expected to depart Selhurst Park this summer. Aware of the growing interest in their midfield maestro, Palace have placed a €95 million price tag on him. The Eagles reportedly know they have “a game-changing player” and are accordingly ready to capitalise on his meteoric rise.  Manchester United want Wharton to replace Casemiro The Spanish outlet claims United “urgently need” a reliable partner for Kobbie Mainoo in the middle of the park. The arrival of Carrick has led to Mainoo’s resurgence, and the United academy product is set to be handed a new contract.  Adam Wharton’s Premier League Stats: 2025/26 Season Appearances21 Minutes per game82 Touches53.9 Key passes1.2 Accurate passes31 Interceptions 1 Tackles 2.4 Source: Sofascore However, his current partner, Casemiro, will depart Old Trafford at the end of the season. It is believed United want to sign Wharton, who has drawn comparisons to Carrick for his calmness in tight spaces, to fill the Brazilian’s void and form a quality double pivot alongside Mainoo.
