United make shock €28m bid to sign midfielder likened to Luka Modric – report

Manchester United have accelerated their attempts to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s midfield. Over the summer, United made a half-hearted attempt to sign Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion. The Red Devils waited until August to knock on Brighton’s door to sign one of their most important players despite their reputation for being hard negotiators. To no one’s surprise, the Seagulls rebuffed their advances.  United wrapped up their summer business without bringing in a midfielder, a decision that left Amorim’s side hamstrung. Heading into the January transfer window, the club’s hierarchy are trying to make amends. Manchester United submit bid for Christos Mouzakitis According to Sportime Greece, United have made an offer of €28m to sign Christos Mouzakitis from Olympiacos. The 18-year-old has been a revelation for the Greek giants since making his senior debut last year. He has already made 52 appearances for them. The technically-gifted midfielder has been likened to Real Madrid legend Luka Modric, owing to his close control and quick feet. Mouzakitis is capable of consistently evading pressure and threading passes between the lines. Olympiacos reluctant to lose Mouzakitis United are reported to be keen on signing the Greece international but their initial offer is considered insufficient by Olympiacos. Europe’s biggest clubs are lining up to sign Mouzakitis. It is believed Real Madrid have made a slightly more lucrative bid to win the race for the Greek sensation.  However, Olympiacos would allegedly demand a figure in the region of €40m to consider the central midfielder’s exit in January. Amorim seemingly values athleticism and defensive awareness in his midfielders over technical security in possession. As such, United would be better off spending such a figure on someone like Conor Gallagher. Late in the summer window, Amorim allegedly tried to replace Kobbie Mainoo with the Atletico Madrid running machine.
