United make major call on sacking Amorim after embarrassing Grimsby defeat – report

Manchester United have reportedly reached a decision over the future of under-fire head coach Ruben Amorim, following the club’s humiliating defeat to Grimsby Town on Wednesday evening.

United beaten by Grimsby

United were eliminated in the second round of the EFL Cup by Grimsby, who beat them 12-11 on penalties in what was a massive shootout.

Grimsby were up 2-0 by half-time, with Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren giving them a commanding lead. It could have been worse for United as the hosts had a further two strikes ruled out.

However, Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire hit back but it didn’t matter too much as the Mariners prevailed in the ensuing shootout.

The defeat at the hands of the League Two club has cast fresh doubts over Amorim’s role at the club and whether or not he is the right man for the job. After the final whistle, Amorim appeared to suggest that the players did not follow his instructions.

A section of the fanbase is already calling for a change in the dugout and now, The Mirror have revealed United’s stance on the situation.

United’s stance on sacking Amorim

According to The Mirror, United currently have no desire to relieve Amorim of his duties. However, talks are scheduled between the Portuguese coach and club executives to discuss the way forward.

The newspaper claims, “Ruben Amorim will hold showdown talks with the Manchester United hierarchy following Saturday’s must-win game against Burnley.”

“The 40-year-old Portuguese head coach will hold talks with club officials during the international break, having cast fresh doubt over his United future with his blunt remarks following the Grimsby debacle.”

“United sources say there are no plans to jettison Amorim so early in the season and believe emotion got the better of him in the immediate aftermath of the Grimsby exit.”

David McDonnell however notes that while there are no plans to part ways with Amorim, there is an acceptance that results will have to improve to guarantee him an extended stay. Having championed Amorim’s appointment, chief executive Omar Berrada, in particular, is keen to give Amorim as much time as possible to overturn the current situation.

Amorim’s terms with United expire in June 2027.
