United make contact to sign maverick £87m South American, Mourinho thinks he’s “great player” – report

Manchester United have reignited their interest in Colombian midfield wizard Richard Rios. Last summer, the Red Devils were strongly linked with Rios on the back of his impressive showings for Palmeiras. However, Benfica won the race for his signature after striking an agreement over a deal worth around €30 million. A year later, Rios could be on the move again after enduring a mixed time under Jose Mourinho in Lisbon. Manchester United eyeing Richard Rios According to AS Colombia, Manchester United and Fulham are among the Premier League clubs who have shown interest in Richard Rios. Clubs in Serie A are also thought to be monitoring his situation at Benfica. It is suggested that United have made contact to express their interest in the transfer. However, Benfica are reluctant to part ways with Rios so hastily. The Colombian international is under contract until 2030, with a €100m (£87m) release clause. As such, it would take an irresistible offer to bring the Eagles to the table.  There is a belief that his reputation could be significantly bolstered if he shines at the 2026 World Cup. Richard Rios’ unique skill sets continue to attract Manchester United Furthermore, Rios is understood to be settled in Lisbon, enjoying his role under Mourinho, who described him as a “great player” last year. The 25-year-old has made 41 appearances across all competitions this season and has been directly involved in 10 goals from defensive midfield.  The versatile midfielder’s combination of flair, technical security, and intensity out of possession makes him a unique profile and explains why he has been on United’s radar since his time in Brazil with Palmeiras. With Casemiro set to depart in the summer, United could benefit from another tenacious South American who likes to make an impact at both ends of the pitch.
