United loanee ruled out with injury despite manager’s bizarre accusations

Manchester United youngster Dan Gore is set to be ruled out with a “foot injury” for a number of weeks after “seeing a specialist” to for an assessment.

The 20-year-old midfielder joined Rotherham United on loan until the end of the season in the January transfer window.

Gore made his debut for the League One side against table toppers Birmingham City on February 1, coming off the bench as Rotherham slipped to a 2-1 defeat.

However, the United academy graduate was surprisingly not included in the squad for last weekend’s loss to Shrewsbury Town at home.

Accusations from the Manager

In his post-match interview, manager Steve Evans appeared “perplexed” by his midfielder’s absence.

“[Gore] worked for two days in the team and went home from training on Friday feeling good. I got a call from the medical staff to say that he’d woken up with his foot really sore,” Evans stated.

“I’ll pick up more of it tonight [Saturday] and tomorrow [Sunday]. It’s unbelievable. We didn’t do enough in training for him to have a sore nose let alone a sore foot. He sat there afterwards having lunch with the boys and had a rub and got prepared.”

It constituted a quite extraordinary move by the Rotherham boss to essentially accuse a young player in his squad of lying about an injury, which he then appeared to backtrack on a few days later.

When Gore was absent for last night’s trip to Blackpool, Evans was once again quizzed about the United starlet.

However, this time the Rotherham manager was much more conciliatory in his answer, suggesting regret over his choices of words on the weekend.

A Hasty Backtrack

“Dan Gore, as I said to you, he just went home feeling his foot,” Evans stated.

“Again, he is seeing a specialist. “We think it’s weeks. Both lads (Gore and Sean Raggett) were distraught yesterday (Monday). I am talking about boys who want to play football.”

Evans’ comments are likely to have raised eyebrows amongst officials at Old Trafford who are acutely aware of the need for a supportive environment when sending a young player out on loan, though it appears hopeful a line has been drawn under the incident.
